I am about to replace a number of wood pieces including the main sills on a 1931 Sport Coupe. This is my first chevy of this vintage and the wood work has raised a number of questions.
1. what is the correct type and color of black paint for the wood?
2. is glue used when joining the wood?
3. over the windshield, where the wood rests against the metal there is a oily/petroleum permeated cloth. what is it, where can i purchase it or how can i make it?

Thanks for the help, Edger

Hi There and Welcome to Chevy Chatter II. Glad to have you with us!

What is the color of black paint for the wood? Hum..I'm at a loss there since I didn't know that black came in different colors. bigl bigl Anyway, the wood wasn't painted other than from the overspray of the body color in certain areas. The wood was covered with a wood perservative and it had a slight greenish cast due to the wood perservative that was used at the factory.

Glue was used in the joints in the rear window area, and also on the wood slats on the roof. Most of the other joints were not glued.

The cloth that you are describing was used to prevent squeaks. You can use a leatherette material and it will serve the same purpose.

Thanks Junkyard Dog for all good information
I have spent the morning looking through my catalogs and I haven't found any green hugh wood sealant to match the factory. Do you have a source?

what I did find was a product from Smith and Company called Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer (CPES), It looks like good stuff, do you or anyone have any insight on this product?

off to work, Thanks, Edger

Nope, I don't have a source for the "green stuff". Not familiar with the product that you describe either. However, most dudes just use a good quality wood preservative to protect the wood.
