I haven't found a post on this topic, nor is it in the owners manual that I can find. I plan to remove the water pump and clean it completely. I understand how to grease it after it's been installed, but what is the process for installing it for the first time? I'm not sure how much to apply or where.
Also, I was at walmart and checked, and they have Marine grease. There seemed to be 2 different types. The type I assumed would work came in a cylindrical tube. It said it was formulated to prevent corrosion (and against salt water, which would help if i happened to drive in the ocean). Has anyone used this, or what should I check on the tube to make sure it will work?
Thanks, Brandon

Is there a shop manual online anywhere? I have the green owner's manual, but not the shop.
I was wondering if I could buy the grease locally, rather than having to order it. I thought some had perhaps tried different things with success.
I'm hoping to get the car in running order in time to go see the new Public Enemies movie with a friend who has a 29.. (29 FXXD).

The waterpump grease is very specialized. It is calcium based to work well in a water environment and will not plug up your rad when it seeps past the internal seal. It also had an NLGI rating of 4. I did extensive searching and could not find a comparable grease. When I called the Lubriplate rep up here in Canada, he gave me the 15 minute tour of the world of greases and lubes. and after he explained this all to me, even the greases I thought would be OK, were not even close, including the marine greases. If you are in a rush, I am sure one of the suppliers would FEDEX it overnight to you.

This is exactly what I did buy before I decided to buy the car. First I bought the repair manual and did study it from first to last chapter. I was impressed by the difference between driving a Ford A and a Chevy (did try both), but I never had a prewar car before and because I had a real financial desaster with an old french Citroen before the Chevy and because I am married the deal was: "Listen, you know all about the stroke you had in 2006 and you will buy the chevy only if you are 100% sure your power is enough to handle it. And I really was not sure about because I had no experiences with that kind of old cars and life after a stroke is a bit different from "normal" life. So I bought the repair manual first, and after study I thought, ok, lets try it. And now I am happy to see I can run it.
So, as I posted sometimes here, first buy the manuals and books and you will see everything is not as complicate as you think about.
The books help a lot, for me the only remaining problem is, that english is not my native language and sometimes it is a bit hard for me to understand the technical descriptions. But I should say, there are no problems, there are just solutions, and step by step I get my chevy in a good condition. In cases of emergenzy I may call my uncle, retired ingeneer, living in Henderson, Nevada since he left germany in 1962, and he did promise I will try my best to keep that bucket of bolts running, and it works...
Sorry for boring you with many details, lets reduce it: Buy all manuals and books you can find (Filling station, ebay.com), read and understand it and you will grade up to a professional mechanic soon and you will be happy.
Looking forward Stefan
