Help anyone,
On my 30 coupe there is a piece of aluminun between the roof metal and the body metal which covers the wood. I don't know what you would call it, but I think it is attached and then swabbed over. This discription is probably about as clear as mud.
Nevertheless, can someone tell me if anyone reproduces this piece or possibly a way to repair mine.
Has anyone had any experience with this piece?
If my question is not clear, please ask for more details.
Thanks in advance.

Yep, your description is kinda sorta as clear as mud. But, be that as it may, if you are talking about the aluminum "roof crown moulding" that goes around the leatherette insert on the roof. It is a bi-fold moulding.

Bob's Automobilia in California used to reproduce an exact copy of the 1930 roof crown moulding (that's where I got mine) and it is beautiful. However, I heard about a year ago that he is no longer making this moulding.

If, on the other hand, you are actually talking about the "rain gutter" moulding, Bob's Automobilia also made that moulding and, as far as I know, they are still making it......at least I haven't heard otherwise.

I knew it was clear as mud. What a great mind and gift of writing I have!!
The molding I'm talking about goes from behind the door down around and over the trunk lid on the body, under the window, and up the other side. This is a rounded molding.
I know of the roof molding because I found and purchased some after I finished my car a long time ago.
If this helps explain what I'm talking about maybe you can help me repair or find another piece.
By the way, thanks for the reply and trying to understand my explanation.

Hey Junkyard,
After reading what I originally wrote, I guess the title, Aluminun roof molding kind of distracted from what I was really writing about.
I guess I'll call it {aluminum body molding} on the beltline between the roof metal and the body metal. Another very clear statement.
Thanks again

Yep.....that is about as clear as cardboard! Anyway, I know the moulding that you are talking about and that moulding is not being reproduced that I am aware of. You will have to repair your original moulding unfortunately.

Junkyard,
Thanks for the reply.
That aluminum will be hard to repair with the body flexing. It will probably crack again.

If the moulding is repaired correctly by a professional and if the moulding is reattached to the body with screws instead of small nails, it should not crack again. Also, the body should not flex enough to crack the moulding if the body has new wood installed.

I redid this coupe about thirty five years ago and installed new wood. I made my own wood because at the time there was no one making wood for the coupe. About a year or two later a buddy of mine found someone who made him wood for his two door coach. I guess my work wasn't sufficient enough and my body must flex.
Do you know or have you heard of a way to do this correctly with screws. At the time I did mine with nails. I drilled small holes and installed nails and then filled with liquid aluminum. Some of them have now cracked. Any advice or expertice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again

By the way, at that time I belonged to the VCCA.
It seemed mostly to be west coast. I still have one monthly publication that I saved. I'll have to get it to see what month and year it was from. You ought to see some of the prices you could purchase parts for. Today it would be like stealing from some one.

Installing the aluminum moulding with screws is almost the same method that you used when you installed the moulding with nails. The correct size holes for the wood screws are drilled in the moulding at regular intervals. Then the holes are countersunk and the moulding is screwed into place. After that the holes are filled with Bondo or a filler of your choice. You will find that the wood screws will hold the moulding more secure than the nails.

Ya, I have been a member of the VCCA for almost 40 years now and I have all of the G&D's except for a few issues missing back in 1961 and 1962. The prices in the early issues are unbelievable, and the technical articles were great too.
