I have had my 1946 chevy pickup truck for 35 years and always kept it stock.
I'm enjoying it more as I get older, going to our local cruise ins, and showing it off. I restored it myself 32 years ago. the truck is the same age as I am, but in better shape. I get upset sometimes, after the car crusins, that it sometimes doesn't want to start without a 12 volt jump. I've put new battery in,and rebuilt starter, and its a little better but can't depend on it everytime.it takes right off with a 12 volt jump, so where do I start, for 6 to 12, and can I keep the original coil? If I'm allowed two questions, the second one is,my transmission will not downshift into second, without grinding.I know it won't downshift into first, without stoping first, but I thought it was supposed to downshift into second without double clutching. If I'm only allowed one question, then answer the first one for me, please, thank you,

Joe Applegate

The number one cause of slow starter speed is a high resistance in the circuit. A poor contact or too small wiring are the most prevalent sources of the resistance. Immediately after (or while) trying to start it touch the cable ends, cables and other contact points. Any place you feel warmth is a location of resistance. It is difficult to check all contact points, such as where the starter bolts to the clutch housing (that is part of the ground circuit). So after you have eliminated the other potential problem areas then you can clean those places. Once you have the electrical circuit(s) in good shape the truck will start. That includes the ignition circuit as well. A lower voltage (caused by high resistance) will produce a weaker spark.

Also, make sure that your positive battery cable is not a 12 volt cable. For six volts your positive battery cable should be at least a "00" in size. I have a "0000" cable on my car and it sure made a difference on starting.

The syncronizer in the transmission is probably worn. At any rate the transmission would need to be disassembled and all parts inspected.
Will it go into 2nd if you double clutch?
