My 31 has an electric 6V single speed wiper motor on it. Have run my fingers along interior header board and cannot find any holes that would indicate where a vacumn switch would have been. The intake has the vacumn port blocked off. Thought that I read somewhere that there was an option of an electric motor for the 31's. Correct or incorrect??
It has what appears to be the correct wiper arm and blade.
Thanks. Jim.

The correct wiper was vacuum for "Closed" cars (except for Cabriolet and Landau Phaeton). I is actuated by a wire that runs from the motor through a small hole in the bottom lip of the front metal over windshield panel, up over the windshield and through a slot in the inside header panel. The vacuum line ran from the manifold through a hole in the firewall to a tube that ran up the drivers door post and out the front panel near the wiper motor. An electric wiper is a later replacement.

We have even reproduced the wiper actuation wire so people can restore their '31 Chevys to original wiper operation.

Thank you again. When it comes time to change out wiper, will keep you in mind. Problem right now is the fact that interior has been done in orginal Hampton Coach material and is quite nice. Should be able to pull interior header down and do that part but now too sure what it will take to put new tubing in jamb area of w/s.

Jim.

Are you sure that the door post tubing was removed? If so it would be a chore to put it back.

Will have to locate all necessary parts to convert it back to vacumn vs electric. I prefer the vacumn to electric. I just flat miss the sound of the vacumn swinging back and forth. It is such a relaxing sound. I turn on the wipers occasionally on my 48 just to hear the sound.

Thanks to all for your help. Jim.

Chipper, appears the tubing is completely gone! Should be seen against left upper cowl somewhere under dash - can reach my finger up above wood framing at w/s jamb area, but to no avail, as I can find no tube. Whomever restored the car saw fit to remove it as am thinking the electric motor was already there. Will have to ponder this a bit.

Thanks for your response. Jim.

Hello jdv123,
over the windshield there should be a board with the crank handle to raise the windshield and the inner rear mirror. To remove it should not be a complicate job, it is just some screws. Behind that board there should be the tube line for the vacuum wiper. If the board is out, you may lube the crank up mechanism too. It is on the back side of the board and is surely in neede of some grease. I had everything (including the glass) out last weekend to renew the windshield seals. When everything was out I took a picture of that tube, if you want, I could send it via email. Send me a PM with your email and I'll send it.

Thanks for your response. My e-mail address is jimvodraskaaayahoocm. My 32 I had as a kid is different than the 31 I now have. Was behind the header on 32. Can't fine the tube along the w/s pillar and perhaps the photo will help me. Jim.
