Is there a preference in mufflers & exhaust on a 32? I was going to go down to the local muffler shop and get a new exhaust system! Anything special I should ask for???

Thanks Steve

The muffler is located under the car and it is attached to the large muffler bracket that is riveted to the left frame rail. \:D \:D \:D

The Filling Station (www.fillingstationcm) sells a complete exhaust system authentic to your year - it's catalog number EX-29-32. If you wanted, you could at least bring that to a shop to put in, although it's not too difficult to do it yourself.

As Skipper says, the exhaust comes off the manifold and straight down the left side of the car about halfway between the running board and driveshaft. If you don't have the muffler bracket riveted to the left side of the frame (as Skipper says) it will be important to put one on to keep the muffler from banging around.

If you look at the illustration on the Filling Station on-line catalog, you'll see the curved piece that goes over and around the rear axle. There's a bow-tie shaped bracket that holds and positions that bended portion of the exhaust pipe. You'll see that bracket available in the catalog as well.

The exhaust system that the Filling Station sells is pretty much like the original, but some "custom" fitting and bending may be required.

I purchased my exhaust system for my32 sedan from kepich and was less than satisfied. the front pipe had to be modified-it is not as quiet as I would like check past threads as this subject has been discussed previously-Parks Pipes advertises in the G & D (club magazine) and I would be interested in hearing from someone who has installed their "bolt on type" muffler.

I used Parks Pipes on our 31. Just the two pipes with a NOS muffler. No problem except I needed to expand the tail pipe just a bit to slide it over the tail end of the muffler.

I put a tractor muffler on our 35 Standard several year past. I liked the sound of it. TS had one with about the same dimensions as original.

It all depends if you're going for Show or Go.

Hey Steve;
just go to a Meineke shop in your area and they can and will make you a system that looks just like it came from the factory. They have in stock ( or should ) all the right size pipes and make all the bends just like you have or want.

If you have the old pipes to use as a pattern a local shop will bend you up new ones for you to install. Could even get aluminumized or ss pipes to slow down the rust out.

Does Meineke have the slip on type muffler that does not use a clamp on the engine end of the muffler?

I doubt if Meineke has the bolt on muffler and exhaust pipe, but they can make you another tail pipe.

Any good muffler shop that has a hydraulic pipe bending machine can make the exhaust pipe and the tailpipe. For originality, the critical part is the slip on muffler. \:D \:D \:D

No exhaust system that is bent on a muffler shop hydraulic bending equipment will exactly match the original. The pipe machine only bends with one radius. Also the diameter of the pipe is reduced in the bend. The original pipes were mandrel bent that produced bends with different radii (radiuses for you non PC people) and the pipes retained their ID and OD throughout the pipe. I can tell a modern exhaust pipe or tail pipe is a matter of seconds.

Hum.....somebody better clue in my muffler shop dude because the stuff he makes looks original. Maybe he didn't know that he couldn't do it? ha ha! Actually, you are correct, some of the bends are not the same as the mandrel type of bend. \:D \:D

Some muffler shops have the newer type bending machine that do not reduced the diameter of the pipe in the bend.

If you are concerned about the looks of the pipe check and see which type bending machine they have.

This newer type machine was shown on that motorcycle show (OCC, father, sons) when they bought the machine for their shop to bend bike exhaust pipes for their $100k+ bikes. A really neat machine.
