Hi guy'sMy 28 2dr national sedan came with an on dash gas guage and was woundering if this was a standard feature on these models??I connot find any info in the manuals about these gauges, or on how they were connected to the fuel system.I have looked at many 28's and I have not seen a gas gauge on the dash.Was this an option????My other concern is that the copper line that connected to the back of gauge is missing, and seem's to be an odd size copper line, that connected it to the fuel system.I would like to make this operational again, it's a nice feature.Can anyone shed some light on how this unit was connected to the system.Thanx.

The first year for a gas gauge on the instrument panel was 1930.

My dash has two 2" factory cut outs on either side of main gauge cluster.
The one hole held the fuel gauge on the drivers side, and on the other was the boyce motor meter thermostat.
If they only put gas gauges in the 30's, what would have been in the drivers side cut out????
Was there any special nationals made this way??

Sounds like those cutouts were added by a previous owner, since those instruments were not used on a 1928 and those holes are not factory!

Did chevy keep the same dash style after 1928???
If so what year did they change??
Is it posiable that my dash is a 30's style?
When I bought the car It came in many pieces, It was taken apart by previous owner to restore, but the owner lost intrest and was going to take it to the scrap yard (shame on him!!!).
So I jumped in and saved this car .
It was 95% complete with no rust holes. It is posiable that he did a dash swap?
I would liked to have had more info from previous owner, but he passed away a short time later, and never got the chance.
Let me know what you can find out on the year of dash.

The stock fuel gage on a 1928 is on the passengers side of the fuel tank and was mechanical.

The two cut outs you speak of are for aftermarket use. The hole on the right, as you mentioned, was cut to install a MotoMeter. Although the gage has a bow tie, it is not a Chevrolet accessory. The gage was operated by a very small hollow line that went from the gage to either a headbolt or a cut in at the lower radiator hose.

The hole on the left was used for an aftermarket fuel gage, that could have been installed many years later and was occupied by an electrical gage that went to a sender unit on the tank. It probably was wired to the ignition switched on position.

If you are lucky you could score a MotoMeter on eBay. If you get the headbolt type insure that the special headbolt comes with it.

The fuel gage can be sourced from your local parts house. Make sure it is for 6-volt.

If the gas gauge has a small copper pipe line connected to the rear of the gauge,it may be an after market KING-SEELEY Hydrostatic type gauge.
I've got an old K-S add showing that they were available as an accessory for Cchevs and other makes of cars.This type of gauge was standard fitment to a lot of mid '20's to early '30's cars.Both my '27 & '29 Olds use this type of gauge.
They require a special type of fluid to be used in them.If you think you have this type of gauge(it will have a small glass sight tube and a calibrated dial face with gallon divisions on it),send me a PM,and I can send you some more information.

The motometer I have does have the head bolt, but the small hollow line you speak of is not on this one.
This motometer has a stiff braided line that is armored all the way from meter to motor.
The fuel gauge is not electric, another member posted some info, saying it might be an hydroststic gauge.

The gas gauge you mention does have the small copper line on the back, but the line has been snapped of at the fitting.
All that is left is a tapered copper line piece, sticking out of fitting.
This unit is complete - copper line, it does have the small glass site inside, but all the fluid is gone, What kind of fluid would have been in it????
Do you know how this unit would have connected to the fuel system?? Is it vac operated off the feul pump (large Stewart Warner fuel pump).
I would like to make this operational again, and would like to get the copper line, if some one has one they don't mind parting with.
Any information would be great.

Jay I think you are confused the gage with the small site gage inside is for the water temp not the gas. I THINK

I have an in dash Boyce motometer with a temp dial on it.
My Gas gauge is the hydrostatic style with the glass tube on the inside, with imperial gallons measurments on the side of the glass tube.
I,m waiting for a reply from another member on info on this, but will let you know if there's any changes.
Do you have the same gauges on your vintage Chevy????

ON Jay I was just interested in the problems you are having and trying to learn I own a 1929 4 door and I read most of the threads and did not understand. I will keep an eye out for the answers.

King Seeley gas gauge parts are being remade. These guys also have the special red fluid. For the gauge to work there should be a chamber in the gas tnk and it also must have the vent tube from the vac tank routed to the open side of that chamber so it can vent air into the "Bell" to keep it full of air. My 24 Olds sport touring had a King Seeley gas gauge as original equipment. When adjusted and calibrated, They are the most accurate gas gauge ever put in a car.
