I replaced all 4 of the power steering hoses on my '62 Impala, added fluid and started the engine.
Once I move the steering wheel it turns by itself all the way then if I move it in the oppsite direction it will go all the way by itself in that direction.
I think I have air in the system, if so how do I get the air out, if not what's I my problem?

You have the two short hoses that go from the valve to the cylinder (power piston) reversed,

The pump will whine if there is air in the system.
To bleed air from system;
Fill reservoir with fluid and let stand for about 2 minutes
Raise front wheels off the ground.
start engine and let idle for two minutes
increase engine speed to fast idle
turn wheels right and left till they hit the stops
Lower wheels to ground and turn wheels right to left again
check fluid level.

Do the above after the engine has not been run for several hours first to allow the bubbles in the system to break-up.-

Pops,
I reversed the hoses once myself and had the same situation. It is a common mistake. When the wheel starts turning by itself it becomes a real "what the @!#$" moment
Good luck
John

I think most of us have learned many things from past mistakes.

John
I reversed the two small hoses, now my steering works great. Thanks very much.
I'm new to the chat room, but I know I'll use it a lot, as I have already had a couple of very good tidbits of your knowledge.
