I'm looking for some information about wire wheel options for a 1929 standard coupe (job# 8880). I have recently purchased 1929 coupe that came with 18" wire wheels. I do not have a complete history on the car yet, but I do know these wheels have been on the car since the early 70's. My limited research so far indicates that wire wheels were an option, but I have yet to find a photo of one. The wheels I have appear to be similar to pictures I have seen of 1930 and newer car. The hub caps are also unique, and I'm wondering if they could be aftermarket. Any help would be appreciated.

The 1929 20 inch wire wheels were an accessory for 1929 and they are very scarce today. The wire wheels look like Model A Ford wire wheels and they use a small hubcap, similar to the Model A as well.

If you find a complete set of accessory 1929 wire wheels they probably won't be cheap. I saw a set sell for $2,500 years ago and they didn't last long at that price.

By the way, the first year to use an 18" wire wheel was 1932.

Thanks, that explains things. I'm in the learning mode here, so I appreciate the info. It appears I have 32 or newer wheels. What is interesting is the rear spare tire mount is the type that mounts the wheel by the lugs, not the rim. It is still a nice looking car, so I'll probably keep the ones I got, not sure I can afford, or find, the right wheels. Thanks again.

Originally, your standard coupe came from the factory with disc wheels.

If you can get information from previous owner showing the present wheels on the car were put on long ago, use them until you manage to find "more correct" ones. The present ones "belong" to the car as a sort of history, specially for that car.
