While backing out from a parking spot at the parts store today I heard a pop in my steering. Now after I turn the wheel it will lock in a area wheither I'm turning right or left.I have about one fourth of my steering radius.I can find nothing broken except a bushing which appears to be rubber. There is a linkage from the gear box which runs straight down to the ground,it has an arm from it which runs to the front of the car where it connects to another arm (this is where the bushing is) that runs to the tie rod area.Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

could be bad news as it is likely something internal in the box gave way. Possible the sector. If you have all the weight off the wheels and the drag link disconnected does the steering still bind? If so it is in the gear box.

The two major components in the box are the sector and the worm gear, the sector rides the worm gear when turning, which causes the pitman arm to do its thing. If you can find the parts the repair is relatively simple. Go to parts needed and ask for parts there. There are several individuals in VCCA that have parts or knowledge of where to look for them.

Does anyone know if any years will interchange with each other?

The 1953 and 1954 passenger car steering gears are the same....There should be some good used ones around, gears that were removed from cars where the owners converted to Power Steering.

When you get the old box out of the car and the new one installed, take a peak inside the old box and let us know what you find.
