I was asked recently what the "blue dot" tail light lenses seen on some Chevys are all about. I didn't know, so thought I would post the question here. I'm sure you guys know. Questions: -- Were they ever an original (OEM) item? -- When did they arrive as an accessory / aftermarket item? -- Why blue and what is the point? -- Why were/are they popular? Thanks! Chip.

I believe blue dots originated in the late fifties as a novelty accessory.Never a factory installed item. The main reason they are used is: 1.Cool purple glow when you hit the brakes. That's why the blue color is used! Unfortunately they are illeagl to use, but,I've never been stopped by a policeman because of them. Most likely would get deductions when being judged, but,I don't care!

I have to agree as I am finishing up my 41 town sedan and went with the blue dots as I liked the looks, hope not to have problems if I do I will just remove them.

Come down to Texas and Oklahoma and check out all the "Blue Dots" When did they originate? I've seen them on Model A's and 1940 Chevrolets and F0RDS.... They probably originated in California.
