There are "assembly manuals" out the for the tri five Chevys.

Can anyone tell me when these manuals came into existence?

Were these manuals published by GM ?

A question came up, regarding the ability to interchange frames between 1955 through 1957.

My 11/1/57 GM Parts Catalog Manual shows one frame for '55 through '57, except for convertible. Footnote shows a different crossmember for Turboglide models.

I am told SEVERAL frames were available, as per the "assembly manuals".

When did these "assembly manuals" arrive on the scene?

If several frames (part numbers) were available, but the GM P & A Manual only shows one part number, how would a guy, say ... back in 1957, get the correct part number for his 1956 frame, as an example?

I worked in GM service for way too many years, but never saw an "assembly manual" behind the parts counter, as a source of part numbers to order.

This has got me stumped. dance

Thanks,

Bob.

I never saw or heard of an assembly manual either. First I saw is when the 1955-1957 reprints came along. They would have been published by the Chevrolet Motor Division.
I am sure they had them prior to that because all the assembly instructions are necessary to put the cars together properly.
Note that they contain only what was done on the Chevrolet assembly line as the bodies were made at the Fisher Body plant.

The 1955 frame is a little different in the where the spring shackles are mounted.
The front frame horns are very different on the 1957 ( longer and boxed). The 1955-56 horns must be installed on a 1957 frame to make it work.
There were two very different frames used .One was two channels welded together to form a box and one was made from solid steel tubing (square) If I remember correctly one was made by
chevrolet and one by AO Smith (in 1958 and up there were three different frames.)
All frames were listed under one part number how ever parts for thee frame types were broken down to the individual frame.
The convertible frame had a center X and the 4 door hardtop frame had extra body moung brackets.
To get the correct part number for a 1955 frame (or the original part number) you would have to see a 1955 parts book. That number would have been discontinued in 1956 and the 1956 part number would be used (and it would be a 1956 frame)....same for 1956.

In the mid 80's I spent a few years in Detroit assembling individual Pre-Production vehicles. We had Assembly Manuals but as the vehicle progressed and by the time the vehicle reached the assemblly plant many assembly things changed and you couldn't always depend on the Assembly Manual to be correct on a lot of items. Most assembly plants had different ideas about where and when some items should be installed. In the later years as a Quality Auditor some of those changes were obvious.

By the way. The assembly manuals were not for parts dept. use. Not all of the numbers in the assembly manual corespond with the parts book.
I have the 1955, 1957 and 1958 versions in reprint.
There is also a truck version thaat covers the Ad trucks. While one manual could not cover all years of the AD care must be used when it is used for reference.

The first Assembly manuals were issued in 1955 and were in use every year there after. The early paper versions were updated seeming every day based upon the revisions we received periodically and it took a lot of effort to keep them current. An update required turning almost every page in the loose leaf manual, removing and replacing only the revised pages. Some time in the mid to late 80's the paper version was replaced with a microfiche version. These manuals were available or every carline Chevrolet build. i.e. Chevrolet, Chevelle, Camaro, Nova, etc.

Fisher Body had Assembly Manuals for their activities also but I believe they were assembled by body design, A, B, C, F, X, W.

Full framed vehicles in the 60's, 70's, and 80's were all different in some way for a given carline. Take the Chevelle for an example. They may have appeared the same but were different. Each side rail consisted of any where from four to six pieces, a front inner and outer side member, a center outer with a center inner for some applications, and a rear outer side member with and inter for some applications, and the gage of the material used varied for the different pieces depending upon the application. IF Chevrolet could save a dollar per unit they would and did. All Chevelle frames had a front and inter and outer side member but the sedans for the most part had the center outer side member only (open channel) and a rear outer only (open channel). Station wagon, convertible, el Camino had a center and rear inter side member (full box).

Part numbers listed in the Assembly Instruction Manuals were the production released item for a given point in time. Service part numbers were frequently different since one service part
might cover similar parts used during the entire production process and even multiple years. Trying to use a part number taken from the Assembly Manual at your local Chevrolet Dealer Parts department can be a disaster. Don't ask how I know!

Collectively, thanks for all the replies.

My P & A Book is the 11/1/1957 edition.

For 1955 through 1957, it shows only one frame number, that being 3741003.

Now, if it were 1957, and I ordered that "one available part number" for my 1956 car, what would I get and would it work for my 1956 passenger car ?

Are there "additional" part numbers necessary to make this work for a 1956 ?

Does anyone have a 1929 to 1962 P & A catalog? If so, does that manual show the same "one part number" for the 1955 through 1957?

Thanks again, to all. dance

The 1955 frame was discontinued when the 1956 came along.
was necessary to use 1956 rear shackles.
The 1956 frame was discontinued when the 1957 came along.
The 1957 frame then replaced both the 1955 and 1956 frames. If the car (1956) is not a 4 door hardtop the frame is installed asis. I find nothing else in my books.
Because the front extensions are different the book says the following in the front extension group..."On 1955 and 1956 models inner brace is revised from original assembly(frame)..drill bumper bracket holes as per template furnished.See group 7009....this is from my 1959 book.

Thanks for that info Gene ..... does your LATER P & A Manual show the same part number, 3741003, for the '55 through '57 frame, as I listed ?
