Yes, I have a shop manual, but mine is a 4 speed. How about the procedure on that trans?

I am not sure. Its not mentioned in my 1934 shop manual and mentions nothing about pulling the rear end in the 1937 manual. In just looking at the pictures I see no reason why the operation would be different for a 4 speed.
Perhaps some one else has had the experiance.
This would be a good time to install a 3 speed. A more friendly unit for driving.-

Wally,
Several years ago I did exactly what you are planning on. I pulled the engine, removed the head and power washed all the gunk from the block and head. I also painted it FS gray. It's a lot of work but well worth it and you won't regret getting your car right.
