Somewhere buried deep in this forum or elswhere on the Internet, I read of someone who found some 12 volt gauges to fit in the original housings or dash positions of the 6 volt gauges for a 37/38. My recollection is they were from an early 70s Toyota, in which the gauge assembly performed 2 functions, such as fuel on 1/2 of it, and temp on the other 1/2 of it, just like the original 6 volt gauges.

Can anyone direct me to 12 volt gauges that will replace 6 volt guages without modification of outward appearance? Do any of the streetrod suppliers have such gauges?

You might want to surf some of the street rod sites for the 12 volt gauges that you are looking for. I have seen the type you mentioned in street rods so they must be available. No doubt the street rod dudes can help you out on that one.

Don't know if this is the one you recall, but Stoveboltcm/techtips/guages.htm has info on using Datsun 260Z instruments.

That's exactly the article I was thinking of. It is at http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/gauges.htm

This will work for early 30s cars, and late 30s trucks, but unfortunately not for 37/38 car...I had forgotten the gauges are individual per opening for a car and are not siamesed/paired like the 37 pickup.

I was going to check on Stovebolt as well, as I am a member there too.

Thanks again.

I used the original gauges in my 37 p/u when I converted to 12 volts,I used a voltage drop for the gas gauge and there is a shunt that is needed for the amp gauge which I have not gotten and it does not work like it should or I dont have it hooked up correctly. Jeff

The amp gage does not need any modification. The only difference will be that the amp gage will only show 1/2 the amps as the 6-volt system would use.
