I have been trying to figure out how to mount the ignition switch in the dash. The switch has two ears with holes, but there is nothing on the dash to bolt it to. I bought the universal ignition switch mounting bracket from Chevs of the 40's, but if this has anything to do with mounting the switch, it is beyond my comprehension.

HELP!

One of those pictures you sent me was the bracket for the ignition switch which is held in place by the choke and throttle cables. It has a bend at both ends with a hole on both ends for the choke and throttle cables to go through then the nuts hold it in place and there is a bigger center hole for the ignition switch with a screw hole on each side to hold the switch in place. Hope this makes sense

Tim,

Thanks for the clue. I have the bracket and will get it installed today.

I am also installing turn signals today.

I have my signals installed also. Best thing I ever did! What are you useing for your front signal lights? I bought the reproduction fender parking lights and put in a brighter 2 filiment bulb works great!

Tim,

My car came with the fender mounted accessory parking lights. They were never wired it, but I am going to use these for the front turn signals. How are your wires supported under the fender from the light over to the engine compartment?

There is a metal bracket wire guide thing that bolts to the bottom of the lights and guides the wires over to a knock out plug under the fender just below the head light wire terminal block under hood they sell them at the usual places Chevs of the 40's and Filling station I think they are around 20 bucks just search for parking lights. Were you able to figure out the ignition switch bracket? \:\)

Tim,

I will search for the brackets. As to mounting the ignition switch, that was a no brainer once you gave me the clue about the bracket in my mystery box. It's already done. That's one less thing to wonder about. I appreciate the assistance.

I know someone that knows someone that has a '37 Chev, but he is about 50 miles away and I just have not been able to get down to look at that car. I would like to shoot a bunch of pictures of the car just to assist in my reassembly. But, I am doing pretty good with the assistance I have received on this website.

For the first time, I took my wife out to dinner last night in the old car. She thinks it is cool, but also said that she is not comfortable in it until I put in seat belts. That will happen in the very near future.

I know what you mean about the seat belts I almost feel naked with out one. That is on my list also. If you need a picture of anything just let me know and I will help ya out my car may not be perfect but is pretty close to original. I am trying to figure out some sort of running board antenna for my radio right now so I don't have to drill any holes in my newly paintd car and the cowl antenna was not available for 37. It is a driver but I am trying to keep as close to original as I can with the exception of the safty items.

Tim,

I would post a better picture, but then you could see the warts better. The photo I am using was taken at night, it looks better in the dark than in the daylight. The car is actually in pretty good condition. The body is clean, straight and rust free. The car was repainted back in the 80's sometime and has minor dings in the paint that will require work later this year. The trunk appears to have been dropped on one corner. Damage is very minor, but still needs to be fixed and then painted. The car came with a new Hampton interior kit about 75% installed, but the seats will have to be taken apart, reinforced, new stuffing added and the upholstery reinstalled. I have the car in good mechanical condition, but all work is not yet complete. Knee action shock rebuilding is in my future, but I am putting it off for a while yet.

In the past someone put a side mount antenna on my car. I am going to leave it. I have an original radio under restoration, and I KNOW it will work better with the side mount antenna than the original that was mounted under the running boards. To me that design was pure stupidity. The steel running boards act as a shield for the radio signals. In an era of low power stations and not too many of them, you would have been lucky to find something to listen to.

I drove my car many years with just primer as a matter of fact if you go to the main vcca page and look under members cars and 100 years of cars it is still in primer there. I have had my car since I was 14. If you click on the link under my signature that is what it looked like the day I picked it up in 79 so don't be shy about posting a picture of your car if it is not "perfect" my car has been painted but is still a ways from being perfect but is fun to drive. Right now I have just some wire strung under the boards and seems to pick up stations pretty well around town but if I get out of town a ways maybe it would not work as well but I thought I would try first before I go the cowl antenna route. \:\)

A trick I have seen done with radio antenna is to run a thin wire around the windscreen rubber in with the glass but not let the ends touch each other or the steel body. Leave sufficient insulated tail to disappear through the dash and connect to the centre of the coax then connect the braid to a good body connection close by.
While I have not tried this the examples I have seen worked well as there is a lot longer length around the windscreen than in the telescopic antenna. It is also a lot less likely to get damaged and doesnt spoil the looks of the car.

Tim,
I have the original under the running board antennas on my '37 coupe. If you'd like any detail pictures of the antenna set-up, shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll be happy to provide them to you.
