Your looking at the wrong end of the horn. To see the working parts remove the back cover. The contacts, etc. are back there. Gene, It sure makes a difference when you go at the problem from the correct end. I did take the horns apart this evening and adjusted them both. I got a nice tone out of one of them, the the shorter of the two makes a raspy noise. I tried the full range of the adjustment with the same result. I guess "it is what it is." I also replaced the wires with new wires that have good insulation. The old wires were just about bare. Thanks for your assistance. Bob, I appreciate your offer, but I think I have them working as well as can be expected. Rich

Best way to set the horns is in the 1949 Pontiac shop manual. Insert .007 feeler between adjusting nut (large nut) and contact blade (feeler 1/4 inch wide).Connect horn to 2 cells of battery. If it works loosen lock nut and turn adjusting nut down until horn makes no sound.Next, break circuit, back adjusting nut off 1\10 th turn and tighten lock nut.Retest horn. Repeat until horn barely blows. Remove feeler and try horn on 4 volts. Horn should operate fairly well at 4 volts. If horn operates connect to 6 volts and current draw should be 18 amps. (Typed this from the Shop Manual)

I don't know if it is an accepted method, but, I cleaned my contacts with my points file, the same way you would with the points in your ignition.

Has anybody ever ran thier horns in series? I now have 12v and my horns sound like toys. They are way to High Pitched. Makes Dogs and Cats howl. I want them to be nice and low like they were before.
6v+6v=12v So, If I isolated the ground on one, and used that to feed the other, In theory, this should work. Right?

Electrically speaking it should work. I would give it a try.

Actually, Now that I think about it, I don't think it will work. Each horn has a "Points" contact style setup in it. Which means the current is going to be interuppted at least 10 times per second. It might be too much of a cycle for the second horn in succession to handle, thus leaving no where for the electricity to return to, and leaving an open circuit. Unless anybody has actually tried this and knows better.

I trashed the idea of the series horn. I did however hide another ballast resistor, in the constant power side of the relay. It dumbed them down quite a bit. I retuned them, and after I sliced my hand into the muscle on a flaking piece of chrome, I reattached all. Not bad...

I am gonna try one more thing. I may get a 4 prong resistor, and run it through twice and see if I can't drop it a little more.
