I purchased a 1972 Caprice with 33,000 original miles and would like to find the build sheet. Everything I've read says the sheet is located either above the gas tank or behind the rear seat. Has anybody here actually found it there ?

Under the rear seat is where I find it is usually at.

What letter is the seventh digit in your 72 Caprice's vin#?Reason I ask is that some of the big car final assembly plants did different things with the final buildsheet as far as location. Jim Downum NIR

Check behind the splash apron on the right front fender.

Could also be under the front or rear carpet.

GENE: DOES YOUR CATALOG GO BACK TO 1972 ? THE ONE AT WORK WAS PRINTED IN 83 AND DOESN'T LIST JACK PARTS FOR 1972. I'M TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT YEARS THE BRKT THAT CONTACTS THE BUMPER WILL FIT. I THINK MAYBE 72 ONLY. CAN YOU HELP. THANKS, ROGER

Roger, The bracket or load rest is 1972 only. Part #6273770, all Pass. except wagon. The wagon is the same as the 1971 Pass.
I didn't have a decent later book either. Bought on at Jefferson last year. Never thought that such new cars would be collectable.

1=Chevrolet
N=Caprice
47=Caprice coupe
R=400 cubic inch V8
2=model year
The US cars had a letter for assembly plant, The Oshawa, Canada cars had the #1-is it a 1...?
The last six numbers are the production sequence numbers.
Looks like you have an import car.
If it was builtin Canada it was "numbered" for export to the US. I beleive that I remember that we did get some Canadian assembeled cars at one time.

Collect the 70's cars now and hope they'll go up in value like the 50's and 60's.

Thanks for the brkt (supt) info. Now all I have to do is find a 72 in a salvage yard around here. Went to Lake Mills yard about a month ago-lots of cars, but no 72's. Do you know of an internet address listing for yards around Wisconsin ? I ubderstand there's a book published in Colorado with info on all U.S. yards. I called them and they're supposed to reprint the book this year.

The Canadian plants were identified by the following numbers:Oshawa 1 number 9, Oshawa 2 number 1, Ste. Therese number 2 (no longer in production)
