I took out a driveshaft today from a '69 Caprice. It was a 350, Powerglide car. The driveshaft has a round collar on the front yoke about 2 inches wide and 3/8 inch thick. I've never seen anything like this before.

Anyone out there familiar with a driveshaft like this one?

Any info would be appreciated.

Bill

It was designed to dampen out drive line vibrations.....kinda like a small flywheel.
If I remember correctly is was part of the "Caprice" extra quiet package. The Caprice also had extra body insulation, which in some years was an option for an Impala.

Hi Bill,
In the '69 and '70 B-Body full size cars there were two types/producers of the drive shafts for them. One type was the Cleveland and the other was made by Saginaw. The driveshaft you have is a Saginaw,as they used the yoke mounted dampening collar and Cleveland did not.It was simply their method to balance out harmonics as Cleveland driveshafts have the square welded on weights up front if needed.
It was not a model/trans specific thing. If a driveshaft/yoke assembly needed it Saginaw collared it,Cleveland welded it.

I wish the forum year grouping would combine the 69-70 models together as they are truly sister cars mechanically/cosmetically,etc...the 69 full size has more in common with the 70 model than with the 65-68 B cars.

Hope this helps,Jim Downum VCCA/NIR (own a pair of 70 Impala's)

Appreciate the info y'all. I can always depend on these forums to get a quick answer. That is something that many other forums don't have.

Thanks again.

In looking back I see it was the 1966 and 1967 Caprice that had the damper - and not other series of those years.
