What are the specifications for a 37-38 generator--specifically amps? What are the voltage regulator specs?

I have what I think is a 37-38 generator that used to be on the 36 Standard and took it off only because wore bearings and voltage regulator stopped working. Put on an original three brush 36 gen purchased from a restored car that had been rodded, but hard to keep the battery from overcharging or opposite not charging enough when all lights are on. I run with parking lights on during the day to try to keep from overcharging. Even at that third brush setting, the amp gauge indicates slightly negative when full lights are on an with the engine running at speed 45 mph or so.

So now am having the 37-38 generator rebuilt that was on the car when I got it and would like to put it back on with new voltage reg. While it was working charging system functioned very well--no overcharging and bright lights! Thanks!

The 1936 generator and the 1938 generator are both 3 brush.
The 1936 gen. is not designed to be used with a voltage reg. and the 1936 did not have one. It had a circuit breaker mounted on top of the generator. There was no way to controll the voltage other than moving the third brush.

The 1938-39 Gen. had an automatic voltage control. It has a circuit breaker and voltage control combines to prevent over charging of the batter by reducing or increasing the charging rate as required. The controll was mounted on the firewall and was larger than the cut out that sat on top of the generator. It was though, smaller than the 2 brush gen used from 1940 and up. If the 1938 Gen. is used on a 1936 and no voltage controll is used the field terminal on the generator must be grounded and the third brush set to produce about 20 amps.
The original 1936 Standard Gen. only produced about 18 AMPs which is just enough to cover the lights originally installed on the car and perhaps a heater. The 1938 Gen and voltage control will produce about 28 amps and will pretty well handle the lights, radio, and heater at 45 MPH and will automaticly cut back when battery is charged. This has been my exoeriance with my '39 compared to my recently deceased 1934....and the 1934 Master Gen would produce more amps than the 1936 Std....If you do use the 1938 gen be sure to used the pulley with the larger cooling fan that came with the 1938-52 generators.

Chevgene, thanks for the quick response and great information. I don't know that it was a 37-38 generator, but what you describe for the set-up seems right. I was just guessing. There was what I thought was a voltage reg. mounted on the firewall. It was all Delco Remy. The generator was bigger than the 36 and whoever had mounted the later generator had done a good job of fabricating mounting hardware. Just bolted it on and off. It was a 20 amp system.

The 36 gen is set to charge at about 17 amps, but the water boils in the battery. And then it really doesn't keep up with the lights, and if I turn on the heater motor definitely in the discharge zone!

I still have all of that 37-38 (maybe??) stuff, but not with me. It's not stored where I live, but in the next week or so I'll dig it up and get some part numbers. That should give a definitive answer.

Note-in the book its listed as a 1938-39 gen...not 1937, although it did become available as an option late in the 1937 production run.
Also get the numbers stamped into the base of the voltage reg.
