Engine numbers, cast in the intake side of the block (FERRO 8) exhaust side 54732. Is there a start setting on the carb, idle & fuel adjustment? Engine runs great then boggs down then comes back. Adjusting makes little diference

Hi,

I need to know what carburetor you have on the car. Also, is the manifold a short neck or long neck and do you have a vacuum fuel pump and is it a G&G?

Is the carburetor a Zenith or Carter? Or an aftermarket?

With the above information I can direct you to a solution.

For 1922 several carburetors models were used. Zenith, Carter, Holley in the US and in addition Stewart in Canada. None of them have an accelerator pump which was used later to reduce or eliminate hesitation. However, the idle jet and main jet sizes plus a restriction in any of the passages can contribute to hesitation.

In addition it is common for the engines to hesitate when cold or in cooler weather when exhaust heat tube is not attached or the bypass is opened too wide. Timing and other engine adjustments can also affect performance. Once we know more details we can make suggestions toward a fix.

Most likely a Zenith.

My limited experience indicates that the Carter RB-0 is a good smooth running carb. Since I have only run one on my test engine can't give too much performance data. The two that I have worked on idle smoothly and seem to accelerate well. They are similar internally to the RX-0 used on 25- early 27 Chevys.

Thanks
I open the main jet about one turn, the idle one and half and can get a reasinable idle and after the engine warms up it will run good for about a half mile, then will start to cut out. Now I'm not sure about the engine year.
