The gas milage was about the same. The 4 Bbl. cars generally got about 1 MPG better but it was because of their higher compression ratio. In 1956 they required preimum gas. That eleminated any money savings. With todays higher octane gas they will get along on regular with out pinging. I run my 1957 Power Pac engine at 12 degrees advanced, use regular 87 octane, and it dosen't ping. In 1957 preimum would have been required even with the timing set at the recommended 4 deg. My trip milage usually runs about 17 MPG at 65 MPH.
You can plan on spending about $100 for a 4 bbl. that will need rebuilding, $50 for a manifold, and another $300 + for an air cleaner. You can buy a lot of gas for that money. I would stay with the 2bbl. They have far fewer problems. You can use one from up to 1962, and the newer the better.
