I have a 1930 Coach. When trying to start the car, the starter is turning but it is not engaging the engine. Any ideas what the trouble could be?

Yep.....it is probably your Bendix drive. It is either not engaging the flywheel due to a bad Bendix drive, or the teeth on the flywheel could be defective. Pull the starter and try it on the floor with it attached to a 6 volt battery. Engage the starter switch and see if the Bendix drive gear slams all of the way to the end of the nose cone. If it does then check the teeth on the flywheel. You also might want to check the Bendix spring to see if it is either twisted or broken (that is common problem with the 714L model starter).

Also check the two bolts on each end of the Bendix spring. They should be tight and locked.

If I had known that growing old would be this much fun---I'd have done it sooner!
