1936 Standard...Is there any reason generator 943-J for 1931-1935 years won't work with a 1936 standard, which had a 946-C. The bench test specs in the Mechanics Repair Manual are about the same in both models.

In judging, is the starter and generator checked to make sure it is correct for the car?

I have a motor being rebuilt from a Canadian car that has starter 739-A. Should I be able to replace that starter with a 738-G starter which is supposed to be correct for a 1936.

Thanks.

The 1936 Standard generator is ventilated (air cooled) and the 1935 was not.
I have never seen the generator/starter numbers check in judging but its not to say it won't happen.
I would assume that if the starter is from a 1936 Standard Canadian car it should fit a US 1936 Standard. I can find no record of the number.

The 943-J and 946-C should physically interchange. Sometime between 11/25/50 and 04/01/52 they were superceeded by GM number 1100502 which is the same as UMS type 60-U. According to my Delco books from the thirties, the 739-A starter will not interchange with the 738-G. Looking at the pictures, the nose length is different as well as the mounting pattern on the bolt holes. Hope this helps.

The 60U is a modified 1938-39 generator that can be used on 1929-39 cars but with modifications and adjustments. It is nothing like the original 1935-36 generator.
You can use the 1935 generator but should be at a lower amp setting. The air cooled 1936 generator also required a pulley/fan combination to suck air theu the generator for cooling.

41Burb, I was able to take the 739-A starter and mount it on a motor that originally had a 738-G and it mounted okay and turned the motor over just fine, so it looks like they interchange.

Sounds good to me. The pics they have in the Delco book might have been for representational purposes rather than exact.
