Well, I know some of you will be schocked but I entered the 6 cylinder world and bought the 31 that was listed in the G&D for $4,200 last week. It is a sedan and I need to know where does the jack get stored if I had one. Do the seats lift up?

On a sedan the jack and other tools are stored in the tray that is under the front seat bottom cushion. That cushion lifts up.

Thanks a lot!!!!
Opened it up and found the jack, crank, and a tire pump. This car was a score. It was sold new at Hull Chevrolet in South Hampton NY, lived out in Bridge Hampton (famous for sports car track, now a golf course) until the mid 50's when a volunteer Fire Department (West Hampton)bought it for a parade vehicle. The Fire Department painted it and gave it a good 20 foot paint job, maroon with black fenders. They sold it in the early 90's, and it changed hands two times before I bought it. It has 39,000 miles, original (itchy) interior. The member who sold it just did not want it to be rodded, no problem here. It is a big learning experiance for me, but to be honest after finishing this last 62 I am all "62'd" out, so I am taking a a few months off before I start on the 409 project.

I was toying with the idea of getting an early six or a late four cylinder car for a few years, I just got tired of the "X" frame cars. Don't get me wrong I am not selling my 60 and 62's off, just a nice change. I even looked at a Whippet but there was too much to learn and nobody to teach the class.

This is another first...... Since 1982 it was the first time I called on an ad in the G&D and it was still there, although there were several calls and pictures sent out before I got my G&D, I was the first one with cash in hand
Thanks,
John

If your car has the original handcrank, jack and tire pump you made a BIG score.......especially if the tire pump is an original issue!!!!

How do I know if it is the original tire pump?

The easiest way is to compare it to a "known" original tire pump. They are scarce but there are a few dudes in the club that do have the correct original tire pump for 1931. You can also contact the tool TA since he might have a photo of one.

Just on a lark I decided to check the front seat of my '29 4 door.

Seat popped up and I found a hand crank, pliers and a wrench inside. Thanks Dog!

There isn't any telling what you will find under those seats. Tomorrow all of you that haven't looked, do that the first thing in the morning! I don't think I have ever bought a car that i had not looked under both front and rear seats, who knows what will turn up!

On open cars it is not unusual to find the top saddles under one of the seats. Maybe, even the side curtains.

Well John, to be honest I am shocked! But that's cooool! Welcome to the world of the fabulous thirties! Yessir...rough riding straight axles, vacuum wipers, mohair fabric and "4-40 Air Conditioning" (4 windows rolled down and 40 mph).
As you know we have several '31's in our Southern New England Region and I'm sure the guys will be a great source of information and parts.

Hope to see you and the new car soon!

I have most of the original tools to my '31 (I'm only the second owner and I've owned it for 40+ years). The tire pump is about 12" long, 1-1/2" diameter, sort of irridescent blue color with a black wooden handle. If i knew how to post a picture, I would...

I don't think I have seen a pump that short except for a special pump to inflate balls, ect

Sounds like your tire pump is incorrect for 1931 because it is way shorter than the original, and it is painted the wrong color as well.

Basket balls, foot balls, socker balls, ect

Your mind is in the gutter! Besides, you can't inflate those balls.

Just like the air cleaner decal, all you "experts" seem to know what's "totally incorrect", but haven't a clue what IS correct.
I've owned this car for 40+ years and I know it sat in a barn for 20 years before that. It is a documented "little old lady's car", and I doubt if she ever looked under the seat. Everything else on this car was completely original, and I have no reason to believe this isn't as well.
The air pump is 12" stroke, about 16" o.a.l. It was manufactured by Noblitt-Sparks Corp. (formerly Indianapolis Pump & Tube Co.), who also supplied Ford, by the way. Contrary to popular belief, everything on this car wasn't dip-painted gloss black - the pump is painted a 1930's-version of "candy blue".
I suppose I'll be banished from the forum for my attitude. I don't like yours, either. You click-ish prima donna's have been no help to an outsider anyway.
See ya.

Coach...
Did not mean to shock you... While I was growing up and my father was restoring model A's and T's so I have been around the early stuff. I am planning on bringing it up to the Poker Run on July 8. I need to install the fabric roof first just in case we get one of those nice coastal mid afternoon thunder storms on my back home
See you in a few

Rabbit,
Despite your opinion many people have researched Chevrolet tools and other parts. Thousands of records and documents have been checked. People who worked for some of the tool suppliers have been interviewed. A booklet on Chevrolet tools has been published, revised and republished a couple of times. This process continues today.

Unfortunately pictures and documents on exactly which tools and by which possible manufacturers are sparse. We have also determined what tools are found in old Chevrolets. If several have the same tools it supports the supposition that they are tools that were in the vehicle when delivered. Since tools that definitely were not originally supplied are also found we cannot rely on a single occurrence of any tool. Yours may be that case.

We have found that by far the majority of tools supplied by Chevrolet have either a natural finish, plated or black. Generally those painted other colors (like green jacks) though the same models as supplied in Chevrolets were actually sold to the aftermarket or used in other makes and models. Since there were only a relatively few tool and equipment manufacturers that supplied the automotive industry many of the same items were used by other makes. Colors and labels often were used to identify similar tools supplied to different makers.

Another fact is that tools were often supplied to dealers in bulk with the instructions to put a specific assortment in the vehicles prior to delivery. It is possible, abet probable that occasionally a rouge tool was included. (I have found coke bottles, golf balls, lunch sacks, etc. behind panels and under seats that were obviously put there during initial assembly. So adding something that was not approved could easily be done.)

If you would like to contribute to the accumulated knowledge then I am sure it would be welcomed.
