Another one of those ID & Engine number questions. Looking at a 56 Belair. Color is Plum & Ivory. ID #VC56S105753 & Engine # 0600144F56F. Is the S the color in the ID # & does the engine # fit the car.Is there a way to tell if the engine came with the car.
Thanks for the help.

The V= 8 cyl. engine
C = Bel Air
S = asembled in StLouis
105753 = production sequence number.Car assembled in March of 1956.
Engine number
0600144 = 601144th engine built , F = at Flint plant, 56 year of engine, last F = Corvette engine with 3 speed transmission.I think you will find there should/will be another letter after the last F.The 1956 passenger car 265 engines were FB, FC,FD and FG plus some had a G prefix.
There is no way to tell if its the original engine.
The Fisher body tag on the firewall would list the body number, paint number, trim (interior) number and body style.The paint number for Plum and Ivory would be 708.If I remember correctly that color came with a Charcoal and Ivory interior.

Thanks Chevgene,

All that checks out, including the colors, with the exception of that last letter on the engine. I'm rechecking it. What does that last letter mean. The only other differnece so far is the 3 speed. This car has an automatic trans.

Thanks again.

In 1956
Power Glide with power pac was a FB
2 barrel with PG and AC was FC
PG, AC and PP was FD
All other combinations (12 more for 8 Cyl.) began with a G with a letter after.

I would bet my last dollar that there is something after the F.May be stamped very light.
